Catalyzing the use of performance as a visual art form, Marina Abramović launched a forty-plus-year career in Belgrade using her body as both her primary subject and medium. She has withstood pain, exhaustion and danger in her ongoing quest for emotional and spiritual transformation through countless performance pieces: early sound-based projects, video works and collaborations with Ulay (Frank Uwe Laysiepen). A vital member of the generation of pioneering performance artists including Bruce Nauman, Vito Acconci, and Chris Burden, Abramović created seminal works of the genre. To date, she is the only one still making important durational works.
